The Baking Process
The recipe I found seemed pretty straightforward, but it did involve a few steps. First, I melted the butter, sugar, and cocoa together to make the base layer. Then I mixed that with the graham cracker crumbs and coconut, and pressed it into a pan. Easy peasy.
The middle layer was a bit trickier. I whipped up a custard with butter, heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla. It took a bit of patience to get it nice and smooth. Once it was ready, I poured it over the base layer and popped the whole thing in the fridge to set.
Finally, the top layer was just melted chocolate. I used some semi-sweet chocolate chips I had lying around. I spread that over the custard layer and stuck the pan back in the fridge. Waiting for it to chill was the hardest part!
After a couple of hours, I finally took the Nanaimo bars out of the fridge. I cut them into squares, and took a bite. Oh. My. Goodness. They were amazing! The combination of flavors and textures was just perfect. Rich, creamy, chocolatey, with a bit of crunch from the coconut.
So, that’s how I ended up spending my day – baking and discovering a new favorite dessert. It was definitely a successful culinary adventure.
