Times were hard, money was scarce, and a little bit of moonshine helped folks forget their troubles, at least for a little while. It was strong, though, real strong. Not somethin’ you’d sip on like fancy wine. A little shot was all you needed. Too much and you’d be seeing double, talking gibberish, and maybe even waking up in the ditch the next morning.

But that name, “white lightning,” it still sticks around. They use it for those fancy vodka drinks, I guess it sounds kinda cool, kinda dangerous. But it ain’t the same, not really. It’s like comparing a store-bought apple to one you picked right off the tree. Both are apples, but one’s got a little somethin’ extra, a little bit of wildness to it.
A Word of Warning
So, if you hear someone talkin’ about “white lightning,” be careful. If it’s that store-bought stuff, it’s probably alright, just a strong drink. But if someone offers you somethin’ homemade, somethin’ they cooked up themselves, think twice before you take a sip. It might be the real deal, and that real deal can be mighty powerful stuff. And remember, drinkin’ too much of anything ain’t good for ya, no matter how fancy the name is.
It Ain’t What It Used To Be
I reckon that some company even stopped makin’ a drink called white lightnin’ a while back, somewhere in 2009 or so. Seems like folks were sayin’ it was causin’ trouble, makin’ young folks drink too much, causin’ fights and such. Guess it got too wild, even for them city folks. They said it made people poor and homeless, always lookin’ for another drink. Just like that gin craze they had way back when, guess history just keeps repeatin’ itself. So, they shut it down. Can’t say I blame them, too much of anything can be bad news. And that just goes to show you, whether it’s fancy cocktails or that backwoods moonshine, that white lightnin’ has a way of stirring up trouble if you ain’t careful.
Well, that’s my two cents on this “white lightning” business. Take it or leave it, I don’t much care. Just an old woman rambling on, I reckon. But I’ve seen enough in my life to know a thing or two about strong drink, and that’s the truth.
